The inspiration for the “LandEscapes” series is rooted in being outside with nature. Ultimately, I paint these scenes to remember a connection I had with the earth. When I’m outside in nature, I have episodic escapes from the busy, chaotic life of the city where I can momentarily appreciate the natural beauty around me. I know these scenes won’t be around forever, so my paintings are attempts to recapture my LandEscapes.
My paintings originate from photographs I take or sketches I make while in the field. In my studio, I reinterpret the chosen scene by focusing on layering saturated colors to give shape to various landforms or natural elements. After I finish the painting, I tie the scene together with dark contour lines with black marker. These fluid, organic lines portray the ebb and flow of nature and are inspired by my love for topographic maps.
